Unregistered users can watch most videos on the site, while registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos. Some videos are available only to users of age 18 or older (e.g. videos containing potentially offensive content). The uploading of pornography is not allowed. Related videos, determined by title and tags, appear onscreen to the right of a given video. In YouTube's second year, functions were added to enhance user ability to post video 'responses' and subscribe to content feeds.

YouTube成立於2005年2月，由查德·賀利（Chad Hurley）、陳士駿（Steve Chen）、賈德·卡林姆（Jawed Karim）等3名PayPal前僱員創辦。其創辦原意是為了方便朋友之間分享錄影片段，後來逐漸成為網民的回憶儲存庫和作品發佈場所。
至2006年，YouTube已有4000萬條短片，每天吸引600萬人瀏覽；在成立後的短短15個月，已超越MSN Video與Google Video等競爭對手，成為本世紀最多人瀏覽的網站[1]。
2006年4月至5月，由香港網民拍攝的短片《巴士阿叔》令YouTube在香港聲名大噪，該片不但吸引很多香港網民進行二次創作，更吸引了本地及外國傳媒的報導和注意，自此，香港網民紛紛上傳各種各類的短片至YouTube。
2006年10月9日，Google公司以16.5億美元收構了YouTube網站，並與環球唱片、SonyBMG及華納音樂及哥倫比亞廣播公司達成內容授權及保護協議，解除市場對內容供應商可能追究侵權內容而升高法律行動的疑慮。
2007年10月17日及18日，YouTube分別開放了中國香港及台灣兩地的中文網站。配合YouTube台灣的面世，YouTube與天下雜誌、三立電視、中國電視公司、台灣公共廣播電視集團、雄獅旅行社等簽訂內容供應合作協議；[2]配合YouTube香港的面世，YouTube已經與香港多個著名機構簽下內容供應合作協議，包括亞洲電視、香港旅遊發展局及香港電台。
